The message below went out regarding middle school choice slips/informational meetings. Unfortunately, we will not have an official list of students attending Bush or Tejeda for a little while longer from the district. In order to be more efficient with disseminating information, we are going to reschedule these meetings. We will let parents know as soon as we have dates scheduled. We have until Feb. 14th to finalize decisions regarding Middle School Choices. Middle School Choice Slips The Tuscany Heights Elementary Counselors will be presenting a PowerPoint Presentation to all 5th grade students about their choices for classes and electives for middle school on Jan. 16th and Jan. 17th. Parents are invited to come to hear the presentations and ask questions as well. On Jan. 16th at 8:30 a.m., the counselors will present information about Bush Middle School to the students who will be attending Bush in the Fall of 2014, and presenting on Jan. 17th at 1:00pm to all students attending Tejeda Middle School in the Fall of 2014. Both presentations will be held in the Tuscany Heights Elementary Library. Choice slips and 3-year-plans will be distributed to students after the presentations. The choice slips will be taken home to be reviewed and filled out. They will need to be returned to the counselors at Tuscany Heights by January 31st. Parents,

Spinal Screening for all 5th grade Boys and Girls Please see the pasted letter below that will be going home with all 5th graders regarding the spinal screening that is required by House Bill 832, February 4th Screening her at school. It gives detailed information about the screening and expectations for dress for our girls. If you have any questions, please contact our school nurse, Donna Hunsicker, 210-407-8221. "Dear Parent/Guardian: House Bill 832 passed by the Texas Legislature in 1985 requires screening all students in grades 5 and 8 for abnormal spinal curves. The purpose of spinal screening is to detect the signs of abnormal curves of the spine at their earliest stages so that the need for treatment can be determined. Scoliosis, a common spinal abnormality found in adolescents, is a sideways twisting of the spine. It is usually detected in children between 10 and 14 years of age. Kyphosis, sometimes called round back, is an exaggerated rounding of the upper back and is often confused with poor posture. Many cases of curvature of the spine are mild and require only ongoing observation by a physician. Others can worsen with time as the child grows and require active treatment such as bracing and surgery. Early treatment can prevent the development of a severe deformity which can affect a person’s appearance and health. School Nurses who have been specially trained as screeners will look at your child’s back while he/she stands and then bends forward. For this examination, boys and girls will be screened separately and individually. To properly screen for spinal abnormalities, all students must remove their shirt for this exam. This allows the school nurse to better visualize the spine. For this reason females are requested to wear a halter/sport/tube top or a swim suit top underneath their shirt on exam day. Parents will be notified of the screening results only if professional follow-up by a physician is necessary. This screening procedure does not replace your child’s need for regular health care and check-ups. If your child is currently under a physician’s care for scoliosis, kyphosis, or other spinal abnormalities, please submit a parent note prior to the screening date. A physician’s statement is required prior to the screening date or as soon as possible thereafter in order to verify that your child is receiving on-going treatment. This information will be placed in your student’s health record. If, for religious reasons, you do not wish to have your child screened, you are to submit an affidavit of religious exemption to the School Nurse prior to the screening. Please call the School Nurse if you would like more information." Tuscany Heights Elementary

A GLOW for our Choir Students and Mrs. Neibel and Mrs. Rivera: I received this email from a man that was staying/meeting a group of colleagues at the JW Marriott Thursday night while our choir, Tiger Beat, performed. It is so nice to know that others that come in contact with our staff and students are inspired, because of the wonderful attributes they possess. “Dear Ms. Neibel, My colleague and I are attending the Zero to Three National Training Institute at the JW Marriott in San Antonio. We happened to be meeting with another colleague in the lobby area yesterday evening when your family members from your choir began arriving for the show. Because we were seated nearby we decided to stay to enjoy the performance. I must say we were so impressed with your students! What a delightful show. The students are quite obviously motivated to perform well and more importantly seemed to be having fun. That is only possible under your ability to engage and excite them about music. Your energy and enthusiasm along with high expectations reminded me of my own high school music experience with a director/teacher who had the same love of music and taught us the value and delight of a group performance. What I learned from that experience continues to inform my work today. What you have achieved with your students is quite special and will be a lifelong, invaluable gift to them. Thank you for sharing your passion yesterday. And please tell your students how much the travelers from Indiana enjoyed their performance. It totally inspired me during this holiday season. Wishing you all the best!
